Sand Casting and Sugar Casting

A while back I went into my son’s primary school to demonstrate sand casting while they were studying the Egyptians. Before I went in we did a few experiments with pouring pewter as it has a lower melting temperature making the heat source easy and demo time faster.

I also wanted to work out if I could get the kids to apply their learning practically by using sugar as our “sand” and chocolate as our “pewter”. We carved potato to make scarab master to mould with. And you know what? It worked! Our home testing also included using Lego Han Solo which if you are a Star Wars fan you will understand why.

Result = 30 kids had a great time eating scarabs at the end of the school day.
