Lancaster Museum treasures
We had a fabulous private tour of Lancaster Museum with curator Rachael Roberts in early May.
First we were able to view a fantastic group of items that her collegue is researching for an upcoming exhibtion about the The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster) and items they brought back from The Abyssinian Expedition aka as a rescue of hostages in 1867-1868. These were exquistie examples of metal work and Abyssian Christian iconography what a treat!
Then Rachael guided us around the main exhibtions upstairs pointing out several items of interest found locally, and gave us more details on where they were found and who would have used them. We learned so much about several important local finds as well as little about the businesses of Lancaster including Abbot and Co who occupied the space where Rachel Hearne Jewelley School is located (see images).
In the education room Rachael had pulled several items from the archive as well as 2 new aquisitons that she discussed in detail, my favourite being the Roman Nemisis Itaglio Ring that is in the current Romans exhibiton. If you have not been into the museum for a while it has changed alot - go have a look it is wonderful!
